  1. Notes on HamComm 2.3:                          Paderborn, February 5th 1993
  2.  
  3.  - HamComm is a program for ham radio communications.  It supports
  4.    reception and transmission of amateur radio teletype (RTTY) and Morse
  5.    code (CW) signals.  A decoder for SHIP and SYNOP reports from weather
  6.    stations is also included. 
  7.  
  8.  - HamComm doesn't require an RTTY converter, not even a modem chip. 
  9.    The audio output of the transceiver is connected to the serial port
  10.    of any PC/XT/AT compatible computer thru a very simple and low-cost
  11.    circuit.  Only one IC is needed (Op-Amp LM741 or similar) and a few
  12.    diodes, capacitors and resistors.  For transmission the speaker
  13.    output is connected to the microphone input of the transceiver thru a
  14.    passive r/c filter.  There is also a tone signal available at the COM
  15.    port without any modification to the computer.  Audio frequency
  16.    decoding and serial/parallel conversion are all done by the program.

  18.  - HamComm will automatically detect the type of video adapter in use. 
  19.    MDA, CGA, EGA, VGA and Hercules are supported.  All graphics routines
  20.    are written in assembler for speed.  No attempt has been made to
  21.    avoid screen flicker (snow) on cheap CGAs.

  23.  - HamComm works to some degree on XT maschines, but the graphics
  24.    displays of the input signal are more fun to watch on an AT-class
  25.    computer.  Nearly all of the functions can also be controlled by
  26.    using a mouse.  A harddisk is recommended but not required.  All
  27.    texts are written in english and the online help system includes the
  28.    schematics for the interface circuit.  There are also predefined
  29.    standard phrases, a QTH distance/direction calculator and a callsign
  30.    decoder.  Currently about 320KB of free ram is required.

  32.  - HamComm will probably NOT run under any kind of multitasking software
  33.    like Desqview, Windows or OS/2 since it needs direct control of the
  34.    interrupt controller, timer chip and serial I/O hardware.

  36.  - On startup the program automatically searches for a configuration
  37.    file called "HC.CFG".  The current directory is searched first, then
  38.    all other directories in the current "PATH" environment variable.  A
  39.    sample config file is provided.  Read it carefully and make the
  40.    required adjustments using your favourite text editor.

  42.  - The converter schematics are included in the online help texts.
  43.    To see them do the following:
  44.     1. Start the program,
  45.     2. Hit ALT-H to start the help subsystem,
  46.     3. Hit the letter 'O' to select topic 'Overview',
  47.     4. Hit the TAB key to select topic 'Converter' and hit return,
  48.     5. Scroll the help text using the cursor-up/cursor-down keys
  49.        and read the text.
